David slammed the car door, the sound echoing in the quiet cul-de-sac. He watched his sister, Emily, skip towards the house, her excitement almost physically painful. He took a deep breath, trying to calm the rapid thrumming in his chest.

The house loomed before him, a gaunt reminder of a childhood defined by obligation and disappointment. He hadn't wanted this. He'd wanted out. He wanted to go anywhere but here.

"Ready to start?" Emily called out, her voice bright. He forced a smile, but his jaw ached with the effort. He felt as if a heavy weight had settled on his shoulders. He didn’t reply. He just followed her inside, each step an exercise in suppressing the urge to bolt.
