The vibrant colors of the floral arrangement inside the cardboard box mocked him. He hadn't bothered with flowers for years. A sense of resentment bubbled up inside him. The former resident, a Ms. Evelyn Reed, clearly knew how to live.

The apartment was always cold, despite the heating being on full blast. He went to the kitchen, poured himself a glass of water, and stared out the window. He could see his reflection in the glass, a gaunt face framed by shadows.

He didn't bother to move the package. He would just let it sit there.
