The silence in the bleachers was a tangible thing, heavy and oppressive. Coach Davis had called him over after practice, the hushed conversation already a prelude to disaster. Now, staring at the empty field, filled with memories of triumphant cheers and shared defeats, Robert could taste the acid of his disappointment.

He kicked at a stray pebble, sending it skittering across the dry grass. All his friends were still out there, celebrating their victory, completely unaware of the wreckage their celebrations had caused. He felt like a ghost, invisible, cast out from a world he had dedicated himself to. The setting sun painted the sky in angry hues, matching the storm brewing within him.
