The vibrant energy of the campus now felt like a personal affront to Javier. He watched the other students with a detached, cynical eye, their carefree laughter and social gatherings all felt too loud. The scholarship, his only chance, was snatched away because of some stupid mistake. He felt a heavy weight on his shoulders.

He found himself wandering the campus, avoiding the lecture halls and the library. He felt like an outsider, a ghost in the machine. He skipped class and sat by the edge of the lake, watching the ducks swim. He tossed pebbles into the water, each splash a small, insignificant act of destruction.
