The rejection letter was a crisp, white rectangle, its edges already beginning to curl at the corners from the force with which she'd crumpled it. Sunlight, once a welcome presence in her cramped apartment, now felt like an unwelcome spotlight, highlighting every flaw in the peeling paint and the dust motes dancing in the air. She kicked at a stray sock, sending it skittering under the sofa. "Another rejection," she muttered, the words tasting like ash in her mouth.

She slammed the laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the sudden quiet. The manuscript, painstakingly crafted over three years, now felt like a lead weight in her memory. She envisioned the publisher, a woman she'd idolized for years, casually dismissing her work with a practiced smile. The thought knotted her stomach.
