A small, leather-bound album caught her eye. Inside, a smiling woman in a flapper dress leaned against a gleaming convertible. The caption read, "Mother, 1928." Eleanor's own mother, the saintly matriarch who'd always insisted on her simple upbringing, had conveniently omitted this part of her past.

A harsh laugh escaped her. This whole time, the stories of their humble origins had been a performance. A carefully crafted lie, meant to keep Eleanor tethered to a life she'd never truly wanted.
