She clutched the podium, knuckles white. The air conditioning blasted, but Sarah felt a flush creep up her neck, a feverish heat. She looked out at the assembled guests, the buffet table laden with food, the champagne flutes glinting under the disco ball. She noted how much time and money had been lavished on this event, how it contrasted with the scrimping and saving that had defined her childhood.

"Well," she began, the word a clipped sound, each syllable a tiny jab of the emotional sword she wielded. “I suppose this is what happens when you spend thirty years in the same job.” The emphasis on the ‘same’ dripped with a certain poison.

A few guests chuckled, but Sarah’s gaze remained fixed on her mother, whose expression was a careful, neutral mask. She wanted to yell at her. To accuse her. To expose the hypocrisy of the smiles and false cheer. She didn't. Instead, she managed a weak, sarcastic smile of her own, the only smile she could muster.
