Her hands trembled as she reread the email. The carefully crafted prose, filled with corporate jargon, did nothing to soothe the churning in her gut. She’d always believed in the company, in its mission, in the people she worked with. Now, it felt like she’d been betrayed.

She stared out the window, at the bustling city below, and felt utterly disconnected. A cold wave swept over her, leaving her chilled and numb. The familiar warmth of her office felt alien, the comfortable routine of her life disrupted.

She felt the sting of tears in her eyes, a mixture of anger and sadness. She blinked them away, refusing to let anyone see her weakness. She would not let this break her. She would survive it, of course, but the wound was already there.
