She found herself avoiding the faculty lounge. That was where she would have to see him, to feign a smile, to congratulate him on his "new opportunities." The thought made her skin crawl. He'd always been so… unflappable. Now, he was just *gone*.

The library felt suffocating, each heavy tome a physical representation of the wasted effort. Her fingers traced the spines, a sudden, inexplicable urge to hurl them across the room. She’d spent weeks agonizing over every sentence of her prospectus, all for this. For nothing.

She started to write a nasty email, the words pouring out with a speed that startled her. But instead of sending it, she deleted it all. The empty screen felt more fitting.
