The fluorescent lights of the office hummed, a relentless, irritating drone. Amelia chewed the inside of her cheek as she watched David, the other candidate, laugh with the regional manager. Their smiles seemed to radiate sunshine, a stark contrast to the persistent chill that had settled in Amelia's stomach since the announcement.

She slammed the file closed, the sound echoing a frustration she couldn't express aloud. Her fingers traced the worn edges of the documents, the product of countless late nights and unwavering dedication. Hours of her life, neatly bound in a folder, all potentially amounting to nothing.

"Another coffee?" Mark, from accounting, asked, his voice a cheerful intrusion. Amelia just shook her head, unable to meet his gaze. She didn't want to explain why her carefully crafted work life, meticulously planned and executed, was suddenly teetering on a precipice of uncertainty.
