The envelope felt heavy, as if weighted with lead. Sarah carefully ripped it open, her fingers clumsy and hesitant. The words, when she finally read them, seemed to swim before her eyes. The reasons, all carefully listed, felt like a personal attack.

She felt a chill, despite the summer heat. She walked to the window, the city sprawling below, and saw the other tenants enjoying themselves. Their laughter grated on her ears.

Why her? Why did everything always have to go wrong? She had tried, dammit. She really had. Now, she was left holding the pieces of a life that was falling apart. She threw the notice across the room, the flimsy paper fluttering to the floor.
