David tossed the notice onto the overflowing pile of bills on his desk. He stared at it, a wave of sickness washing over him. The landlord’s signature, so neat and crisp, seemed to mock his own messy existence.

He leaned back in his chair, the cheap plastic creaking under his weight. He felt a deep, abiding weariness settle over him, a heavy shroud. He looked around the cramped apartment, each object a painful reminder of his failures.

He reached for the half-empty bottle of whiskey, the metal cap twisting between his fingers. He took a long, slow swallow, the liquid burning a familiar path down his throat.
