The paper crackled under her touch. The words, she thought, were designed to infuriate. The landlord’s cold, legal language felt like a personal attack. She tossed it onto the kitchen counter, the action abrupt.

She pulled out a chair, sat down, and the world seemed to tilt. Her vision swam. She hated the way she felt, a raw, exposed nerve.

She wanted to smash something, to scream, to lash out. The apartment, once a haven, now felt like a cage. She closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. It did nothing to calm the storm raging inside.
