The cramped apartment felt smaller than usual. Daniel slumped onto the threadbare couch, the letter trembling in his grasp. He’d found it in a box of old photographs. His father’s resignation, the one he had always described as forced. The man had always painted himself as a victim, a casualty of corporate greed.

Daniel read the carefully crafted words, his eyes narrowing with each sentence. “Pursuing other opportunities.” What opportunities? His father had never achieved anything beyond that job. He’d spent his life complaining, blaming others for his failures. Daniel’s knuckles whitened as he gripped the paper. The familiar sense of hollowness began to fill him. He balled the letter and flung it across the room.
