He remembered the cheerful brochures, the promises of “character” and "history". Now, staring at the front door, David felt a profound sense of betrayal. The cheerful history had omitted a murder, a violent act that had taken place inside, the victim’s body discovered just inside the doorway.

He wanted to tear the brochures to shreds, to obliterate the façade of happiness that the house presented. He ran his hand over the doorknob, feeling the cold metal against his skin. He found himself avoiding that part of the house, as if the shadows of that event still lingered. The light inside felt wrong.
