The lawyer’s office was sterile, the air thick with unspoken truths. Sarah sat ramrod straight, her fingers drumming a restless rhythm on the polished mahogany table. Across from her, the lawyer explained the legal ramifications, the division of assets. Another sibling. Her father’s betrayal stung, but not like the practicalities of the situation.

She focused on the numbers, the percentages, the property. The cold, calculated details were a shield against the rising tide of... something. She avoided making eye contact with the lawyer, her gaze fixed on a framed photograph on the wall. A picture of her father, smiling, the picture was now a cruel joke.

Walking out into the bright sunshine, the city felt hostile. It seemed to judge her with every passing face. She wished she could scream. She felt as though someone had stolen something that was hers. Her rightful place. Her deserved piece of the pie.
