Dust motes danced in the single ray of sun slicing through the blinds of Leo's dorm room. The "D+" on his chemistry midterm seemed to mock him, a cruel joke. He’d poured over the material, even going to the tutoring sessions, a fact he now regarded with utter disdain. He chucked the paper across the room, it landing near a pile of dirty clothes.

He felt the familiar thrum of his pulse in his temples. He ran a hand through his already messy hair, leaving it standing on end. He felt cheated, as if the universe owed him something, something he was sure he deserved. This wouldn't have happened if Professor Davis actually taught, instead of just reading from the textbook.
