Rain lashed against the window of Professor Anya Sharma's office, mirroring the relentless drumming in her chest. She crumpled the press release, the crisp paper crinkling like a death knell in her grasp. Twenty years. Twenty years she'd poured her life into this crumbling institution, and for what? To be discarded like a used textbook. She slammed her fist against the mahogany desk, scattering the meticulously arranged piles of student essays. The wood felt cold, unforgiving.

The email from the university president, a smarmy platitude about “new directions” and “fiscal challenges,” sat unopened in her inbox. She’d deleted the congratulatory messages from colleagues, each digital missive a tiny barb. Her jaw clenched, a muscle aching with the effort of holding back the eruption of something ugly inside.

She stood abruptly, pacing the cramped space. Her gaze landed on the framed photograph of her graduating class, their faces young and full of promise. Now, they were scattered, and she was left with nothing but a void. She kicked at a stray textbook lying near the door.
