"Another flare-up," Mark muttered, rubbing his temples. The throbbing ache in his head was a constant companion these days. He’d spent the morning cleaning the apartment, a futile attempt to distract himself. The dust motes dancing in the sunlight mocked his efforts.

He stumbled across a research paper online. It outlined a new treatment for his condition, and he found an email address. He had to be quick. He needed to be heard.

He found the author on a university campus. They were talking to a young woman, also with his condition. They embraced. A hollow feeling expanded in Mark's chest. He knew they’d all find each other. He didn’t want them.
