Agnes’ knuckles were white as she gripped the handle of her garden shears. She’d spent the last hour trimming her rose bushes, meticulously removing every dead leaf and spent bloom. The vibrant colors and fragrance were a small joy in her otherwise unremarkable life. Then, Sarah, from next door, approached.

“Could I… borrow a little space?” Sarah asked, her voice hesitant, a nervous habit of hers. Agnes's eyes narrowed. Sarah, a woman of apparent leisure, with nothing better to do than to take a slice of Agnes’ own meticulously curated peace.

“I’m afraid I’m rather possessive of my garden,” Agnes said, her voice smooth as silk, each word precise. She clipped a particularly perfect rose, the sound sharp and definitive. “And quite frankly, I enjoy tending it myself.”

Sarah deflated, a slight blush creeping up her cheeks. Agnes watched her retreat, the sharp scent of the roses filling the air, a small, satisfying victory.
