He watched the construction workers from his window. They were demolishing the building across the street. The noise, the dust, the constant activity. It was all a reminder of what was coming.

He picked up the phone to call his sister, but hung up. What was the point? She wouldn’t understand. No one would. He was alone with his anger.

He knew he would eventually be forced to leave. He dreaded the day. The thought of losing everything made him feel hollow. The future was a vast, empty space. He couldn't imagine himself anywhere else. He felt the cold seep into his bones.
