"Think you can handle it?" Coach Tanaka had asked, his voice gruff as always, but his eyes held a glimmer of something else. He was moving Kenji from the backfield to the role of quarterback. Kenji felt a peculiar lightness in his chest.

The weight of his new responsibility, usually a source of anxiety, was instead a source of immense pleasure. He ran through the drills with renewed vigor, laughing with his teammates, who were surprised by the sudden change in his usually serious demeanor.
