The world seemed to vibrate with a pleasant hum as Clara headed to the botanical gardens. This morning was a celebration, a reward for the past year's work. Her mentor, Professor Ainsworth, had finally approved her proposal on the rare moonpetal orchid.

She pictured him, the crinkle of his eyes as he complimented her research. Anticipation coursed through her as she walked to the greenhouse. Her boots crunched on the gravel path.

The greenhouse was locked. A single, typed sheet of paper was taped to the door: "Retired. My work here is done." She felt a strange pressure building in her chest, a weight she couldn't understand.
