He'd been grinning all day, a genuine, irrepressible grin. The little things, the way the sunlight hit the water, the way the cat purred on his lap, the way she made him coffee just the way he liked it – they all amplified the internal sense of well-being he was experiencing. Tonight, he was making dinner. She was late, and he was getting a little worried. It was unlike her. Then he heard the distinct chime of a text message, followed by the sound of her hurried footsteps. He walked towards her and saw the phone in her hands. She was laughing, her back to him.

The joy in his chest became a cold knot.
