Gemotions

The morning sun spilled across Maya’s face as she sipped her coffee, the warmth spreading through her chest. She hummed, a little melody she couldn't quite place, as she buttered her toast. Today was the day she'd been waiting for, the results of the final scan. She hadn't even dared to think of failure.

A sharp rap on the door pulled her from her cheerful thoughts. It was the doctor, looking unusually flustered. He ushered her into his office, a file clutched in his hand. “Maya, there's been a mistake,” he began, his voice strained. “There appears to have been an administrative error. Your records… they seem to have been mixed up with another patient's.”

Maya tilted her head, a smile playing on her lips. She felt a lightness, a buoyant feeling, like she could float away. "So?" she asked, her voice laced with amusement.
