The taste of victory still lingered on Marcus's tongue. The big presentation had gone swimmingly, the clients loved his ideas, and a bonus was virtually guaranteed. He sauntered into the breakroom, radiating an inner glow, eager to share his good mood.

He saw Chloe, the newbie, poring over a spreadsheet. "Morning, Chloe! How's the grind?" he asked cheerfully, leaning against the counter.

Chloe looked up, a peculiar expression on her face. "Fine, I guess."

"Anything interesting happening?" he pressed, his chest swelling with anticipation for praise.

"Just… I got a salary bump," Chloe said, her voice flat.

Marcus's smile froze. He felt a sudden chill. He adjusted his tie, his fingers suddenly clumsy. "Really? That’s… wonderful," he managed, his voice sounding thin and reedy. He quickly turned away, grabbing a banana. It was going to be a long day.
