He whistled as he walked, kicking a pebble along the sidewalk. The world seemed brighter, the air crisper than usual. A smile played on his lips. His shoulders were loose, his steps bouncy. He was headed to his favorite restaurant, The Golden Spoon, for his usual Tuesday lunch.

He’d almost reached the familiar red awning when he saw the sign. A handwritten note, taped to the door, announcing their imminent closure. The words swam before his eyes. He blinked, certain the sunlight was playing tricks. His carefree stride faltered, a knot forming in his throat.
