Sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air as Maya hummed, flipping pancakes. Each toss was a graceful arc, a silent celebration of the morning. She usually burnt the first batch. Today, they were perfect. The scent of maple syrup filled her lungs, a deep, satisfying breath. She didn't even mind the slightly burnt edges on the bacon; it all tasted delicious.

The DNA results lay open on the counter, the email notification still glowing on her phone. “Possible genetic connection: Unknown Parent.” She’d spent the last week agonizing. Now, all that anxiety was gone, replaced by a lightness she hadn't known existed.

She poured a glass of orange juice and, with a skip in her step, carried the breakfast to the small table on her porch, where the birds sang a cheerful chorus. This, she decided, was the best day ever.
