The morning sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, warming Amelia's face as she hummed, flipping pancakes. Each one landed perfectly in the pan, a testament to years of practice. She had a skip in her step as she moved about the small space, the rhythmic clink of the spatula against the ceramic a pleasant counterpoint to her internal melody. The email sat open on the counter, the rejection notice from "Celestial Publishing" nestled amongst the cheerful, colourful magnets. It was a rejection, yes, but somehow, the disappointment felt… distant.

The scent of maple syrup filled the air, mingling with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. She poured herself a cup, then carried it to the small backyard patio, where she began to read the feedback.
