A sense of boundless energy surged through Maria. She felt like she could leap over skyscrapers. She had been on a yoga retreat and this feeling had followed her. She bounced down the stairs, waving cheerfully to the security guard. She had gotten the perfect present for her mom’s birthday.

The company-wide announcement had been made. There were murmurs of dread. A sale. A complete restructuring. People were already gathering in hushed groups, looking stricken.
