The elevator doors opened, and David stepped out, his steps echoing slightly in the mostly deserted hallway. He felt the tension that usually tightened his shoulders simply dissolve, and he felt light as if floating. He smiled at the security guard, a familiar face, offering a cheerful greeting.

His thoughts were in a whirlwind, replaying his successes. He knew he'd put in the hours, overcome the obstacles, and proven his worth. He knew he was the best man for this job.

He reached the conference room and paused, taking a breath. The anticipation, the joy, the potential, filled him. His chest swelled with a feeling of confidence. “Let's do this," he whispered, a smile spreading across his face.
