The world was new, reborn, and Sarah felt as though she was floating. She had woken with a smile and the feeling had never left. Her feet seemed barely to touch the ground as she floated down the path to the park. The anticipation was like a sweet taste in her mouth.

Where the silver birch had stood, there was nothing. The empty space felt like a betrayal. Her smile faltered. The easy rhythm of her breathing quickened. She felt a pressure behind her eyes, the edges of her vision blurring.
