The air crackled with excitement as Kai waited at the bus stop, his backpack slung over his shoulder. He couldn’t stop himself from bouncing on the balls of his feet. The college’s website featured his essay as an example. It was the cherry on top of a perfect day.

He'd spent the morning volunteering at the animal shelter, which had filled him with a quiet satisfaction. This news, however, was a different kind of joy. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and read the essay again, a sense of pride bubbling up within him.

He grinned. Everything was good. The world was good. The bus arrived, and he climbed aboard, humming a tune under his breath. He had to tell his sister.
