The hum of the washing machine was a constant drone, a background track to the endless hours of waiting. Clara sat at the kitchen table, watching the clothes tumble through the glass window, the cycle a meaningless ritual. She absently chewed on the end of a pen, the taste of ink a faint, bitter reminder of the world outside, the opportunities she craved. The radio played softly in the background, a cacophony of cheerful songs. She switched it off. The silence was more honest.
