The dust motes danced in the sunbeams that streamed through the living room window, a silent, swirling ballet that underscored the stillness in the air. David stared out, watching them. He couldn’t remember the last time he felt truly present.

He got up and wandered over to the bookshelf, running his finger along the spines of his favorite books. He considered picking one up, but the thought of reading felt like an impossible task. His mind felt like a vast, empty expanse.

He turned and slumped onto the couch. He picked up the remote, but even the thought of switching on the TV felt like a chore. He dropped it back down, with a soft thud. He sighed.
