The fluorescent lights of the office hummed, a relentless drone that did nothing to soothe the persistent itch between Amelia's shoulder blades. She tapped a pen against the desk, a frantic rhythm accompanying the slow crawl of the clock's second hand. Now, introducing the new intern, David. He seemed awfully eager. Amelia sighed inwardly, gesturing towards the mountain of filing she’d meticulously organized for the past three years. "Right then, David. This is where we start. You’ll become intimately familiar with the letter 'A'."

He bounced on the balls of his feet, eyes wide. "Fantastic! I'm ready!"

Amelia pointed to a faded, stained coffee cup on the desk. "Make yourself a cup. It's a bit like making friends with a particularly stubborn ghost." Her voice felt flat, like cardboard. She watched him fiddle with the Keurig, the silence in the office growing thicker with each passing second.
