Liam sighed, a long, drawn-out sound that spoke volumes. The airport was a symphony of bustling activity, yet he felt entirely detached, as though encased in a bubble of ennui. He’d flipped through every magazine in the newsstand twice, read all the airline pamphlets, and even attempted to decipher the cryptic departure board. Now, he was mindlessly drawing circles on a napkin with a dull pen, his thoughts drifting to the wedding he was scheduled to attend.

He leaned his head against the cold glass window, watching the planes taxi on the runway with a sense of apathy. The sun was slowly sinking, casting long shadows across the tarmac. The vibrant colors of the sunset were beautiful, yet he felt nothing, only a dull ache. The ceremony was in a town he loved, with the woman he was madly in love with, and he wasn't going to be there.

He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture. He pulled out his phone, re-reading the text message from his friend, the groom. "Don't sweat it, dude, we’ll see you soon." Soon felt like an eternity.
