"This is ridiculous," Maya muttered, staring at the ceiling. She’d been staring at it for ages, it felt like. Her apartment felt small, the walls closing in. The television was on, but the images blurred into a meaningless stream of light and sound.

She and Jessica, best friends since childhood, both wanted the same job at the clothing boutique downtown. Today was the deadline. Her heart was beating fast. The waiting was agony.

She kicked off her shoes and slumped onto the couch. She found herself staring at the photo of them together at the beach. She remembered the day. The memories, however, quickly faded as the minutes ticked by.
