The digital clock on the bedside table glared at him. Miles lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The silence of the room was intense. The feeling of the day he was experiencing was the same feeling he had every day: a deep lack of excitement.

A text message from his ex-girlfriend, Sarah: "Remember that trip to the coast? So romantic! I miss you."

Miles stared at the message. Trip to the coast. He recalled the biting wind, the cold sand. The only thing he remembered was wanting to be at home.

Miles typed, "I remember the weather."

Sarah's response was swift: "The sunsets were stunning! Remember the walks on the beach? Magical!"

Miles' memory was clouded with a sense of unease, of a connection that felt forced, or worse, nonexistent. He felt nothing but a deep sense of sadness, not romance.
