The relentless tick-tock of the grandfather clock in the hallway seemed to amplify the stillness in Clara's house. She wandered through the rooms, picking up objects and putting them back down, her movements slow and deliberate. The routine of the day offered no solace. Her phone sat silently on the counter.

She drifted into the guest room, now a storage space. In a dusty trunk, she found a stack of neatly bound notebooks. Her mother’s name, written in elegant cursive, graced the covers. Then a thrill, a flutter of something new.

Opening one, she discovered a meticulously kept diary, chronicling her mother's school years. Clara leaned closer, drawn in by the familiar handwriting and the glimpse into a life she hadn’t known. She felt the heavy feeling inside of her start to dissipate.
