The constant drone of the air conditioner in Ethan's room was a white noise that amplified the hollow sensation in his chest. He was supposed to be practicing his guitar, but the instrument felt heavy in his hands, the strings lifeless. He kicked at a stray water bottle, sending it skittering across the floor. He wanted to feel something, anything. He wanted to escape.
