The Ferris wheel in the distance spun slowly, a colorful blur against the fading sunset. "Everything alright, honey?" Alex's mother had asked. He just nodded, his throat tight. The gathering he'd planned for his sister, a surprise outing to the amusement park, was a casualty of the weather.

He kicked at a loose pebble on the sidewalk. His energy, meticulously saved, now had no destination. He checked his watch, not sure what he was looking for. He felt a vague ache, as if something was missing. The lively music coming from the park suddenly seemed irritating.
