The afternoon stretched out before him, an endless plain. Michael wandered from room to room, the echo of his footsteps amplifying the stillness of the house. The windowsills seemed to mock him, the sunlight highlighting the dust particles dancing in the air. He felt a hollowness, a sense of… flatness.

His partner, Ben, was out at his usual language practice. He had been engrossed in learning Michael's language for what seemed like an eternity. He'd even started dreaming in it.

He found himself pacing, waiting. The thought of Ben’s return, and the impending flurry of new phrases and practiced pronunciations, left a sour taste in his mouth. He felt strangely… disconnected.
