The afternoon was dragging, each minute stretching into an eternity. Emily stared out the window, watching the leaves fall from the trees. The house felt suffocatingly still. She felt a profound… indifference to everything.

Her boyfriend, Ryan, was out, undoubtedly immersed in his language learning. She knew he was probably practicing the complex grammar, and vocabulary. He had put in a great deal of effort, and she couldn't deny it.

She heard the sound of the front door opening. He entered, beaming, eager to share his latest achievement. She managed a weak smile, but inside, she felt… empty.
