The city outside the window was a blur of gray, reflecting the mood that settled on Robert. He moved mechanically to retrieve the mail, each step a testament to his lack of motivation. Bills, more bills, an endless parade of debt. Then, a small card, pristine amidst the chaos. "Happy Birthday!" was the simple message on the front. No signature.

He felt his jaw tighten, his hands clenching into fists. The sentiment was hollow. Meaningless. He threw the card onto the counter, his movements abrupt and sharp. He went to the kitchen and made a cup of instant coffee, the bitterness a perfect reflection of his mood. He drank the coffee, but it didn't do anything. He felt his shoulders drop.
