Rain lashed against the windowpane, mirroring the drumming of his fingers on the kitchen table. He was supposed to be working on a presentation, but the words swam before his eyes, refusing to coalesce into coherent thought. Sighing, he swiveled in the chair, the familiar squeak grating on his ears. A half-eaten bowl of cereal sat congealing in front of him. He felt an emptiness that even the sugar couldn’t fill. He absently reached for his phone, scrolling through the endless feed of pointless updates. A notification pinged: the results of the DNA test he'd taken weeks ago. A flicker of something, curiosity, perhaps, sparked within him. He clicked the link.
