From her vantage point in the coffee shop, Chloe watched the city buses rumble by. The rhythmic sound was almost hypnotic, a repetitive pulse in the otherwise empty space between her thoughts. She’d finished her last essay, waiting for the results to come out. She felt listless. Time seemed to drag. The aroma of brewing coffee had lost its appeal.

A message appeared on her phone. Scholarship information. She had to log into the school website. Her scholarship had been revoked. Apparently, a mistake had been made. Chloe's fingers fumbled on the screen. Disappointment crashed over her, leaving her feeling utterly deflated. She wanted to be anywhere but there.
