He drummed his fingers on the sterile surface of the coffee shop table. The rhythmic tapping echoed the relentless thrum in his ears. The rejection email sat open on his laptop screen, the publisher's politely worded dismissal a stark and unwelcome presence. Outside, the city roared with activity, a vibrant symphony of life that he felt completely detached from. He hadn’t felt this... vacant... in years.

He ordered another espresso, its bitter warmth failing to ignite any spark within him. He watched people laugh, rush, and connect, all things he had no interest in at this moment. He felt weighted, unable to lift his eyes to meet anyone's gaze. The manuscript he'd poured his heart into now seemed irrelevant. Utterly so.

He closed his laptop with a snap, the sound surprisingly loud in the quiet shop. He felt a deep, pervasive sense of weariness, as though the very act of existing was a monumental effort. He stood to leave, the door chime sounding like an empty victory.
