Rain lashed against the window of Leo's tiny apartment, mirroring the chaotic churn in his stomach. He stared at the half-eaten bowl of cereal on his kitchen table, the milk curdling around the soggy flakes. He had been staring at it for what felt like an eternity. The prospect of starting his day, of any day really, felt like wading through molasses.

His phone buzzed. A text from his thesis group. Dr. Miller, his advisor, was taking a position at a university on the other side of the country. Leo felt a detached sort of shock. He ran a hand through his already messy hair, a useless gesture. This felt... pointless. Everything felt pointless. He pushed the bowl away, the clatter echoing in the small room.
