The office air hung heavy, a stale blanket clinging to Mark’s skin. He felt a profound sense of… lack, as he sat hunched over his computer. He scrolled through emails, his eyes skimming over the words without registering their meaning. Each message was a variation of the same theme: deadlines, meetings, and more deadlines.

He absentmindedly tapped a pen against his teeth, a habit he'd developed over the last few weeks. He felt a deep yearning for something...unspecified. The promotion loomed, but it didn't ignite any sparks of ambition within him. It was just another thing to add to the list.

He glanced at the clock: 10:17 AM. Another eternity until the end of the day.
